On Stage at Camp Enchantment: Folktales from around the world
Camp Enchantment is part of Enchantment Theatre Company's The Magic of Masks, an arts education program that brings students into the magical world of theatrical production from beginning to end, with an emphasis on performance skills – how to use puppets and masks, how to move on stage, how to perform in a show for an audience of peers, teachers, family and community members.

Camp Enchantment students will work under the direction of a teaching artist and assistant in groups of eight to ten campers. Each group will learn to create, mount and present a ten-minute production based on folk tales originating around the world. At the end of each two-week Camp session, the finished shows will be presented for family and friends! Likely shows include:

  • The Magic Lake
A story from Ecuador about a poor young girl who cures an ill prince with water from a magic lake.

  • The Bachelors and the Python
A story from Central Africa telling how a giant snake rewards a gentle and lonely man with the girl of his dreams.

  • The Fisherman and his Wife
A story from Germany that tells the tale of how greed overtakes the wife but ultimately, with the help of an enchanted prince, she learns to love simple life by the sea.

  • The Shepherd and the Weaver
A Chinese story about a shepherd and a celestial maiden who happens to be the daughter of the Emperor of the Sky. Although they marry, ultimately they can only meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month.

  • The Rolling Rock
A Sioux myth that tells how the Rocky Mountains were created by a coyote, a rabbit and a magic rock.
