Available for performance with orchestras by the fall of 2012 Inspired by the rich musical imagery of composer Maurice Ravel, we enter the world of Mother Goose as she tells the enchanting stories of her childhood. As she spins her tales, magic takes hold and she herself is transformed into each romantic heroine, discovering youth, lost love and new possibilities. With the prick of a finger Sleeping Beauty and her court fall into their hundred year sleep. As they dream away, Tom Thumb drops breadcrumbs through the forest seeking his way home. The Beast conjures up magic flowers for Beauty; The Green Serpent, a spellbound Prince, swims many leagues under the sea; and the Princess of the Pagodas floats on the waves in a magic boat towards The Fairy Garden. Prince Charming slashes his way through the briars towards the Sleeping Princess. With their magic kiss, the world awakens, the spell is broken and everyone is reunited in a celebration of love, redemption and hope. Mother Goose resonates across the life cycle: its impressionistic French music is exquisite and sophisticated enough to appeal to the parent or grandparent, while Enchantment's work on stage, drawing on Ravel's evocative musical imagery and cast of fairy tale characters, will delight and enchant any child. Set to the score of Ravel's Mother Goose ballet, and in the winning tradition of Enchantment Theatre Company's Firebird, Cinderella and Scheherazade, the piece will be performed onstage in front of the orchestra, incorporating the company's signature blend of puppetry, masked actors, magic, dance and pantomime. This is the perfect program to celebrate the exquisite genius of Maurice Ravel in the 100th anniversary year of the premiere of this enchanting masterpiece. |
